Offshore

Bermuda, the Cayman Islands, British Virgin Islands and the Bahamas are idyllic destinations and, to varying degrees, are sophisticated and high-quality offshore financial and business centres. Driven by tourism, finance and banking, these tropical and subtropical islands offer an attractive and exciting place to live and work as a lawyer.

Legal Market

The principal areas of demand in these locations are for lawyers with expertise in corporate finance, funds, banking and finance and trusts. The firms vary widely in size, though in general terms tend to be smaller, office hours are shorter and responsibilities are shared. Lawyers are involved in the “offshore end” of cutting-edge transactions which are often large, complex and involve multiple jurisdictions.

Remuneration

Offshore markets are desirable for more than just their setting; you’ll enjoy a high salary that is either untaxed or taxed at a very low rate, and will often be compensated for relocation costs.
Visas

There are several official paths to legal work in offshore markets, all relatively straight forward. You will need sponsorship from your employer, but the complexity of the process varies from country to country and also depends on your own experience and citizenship. A minimum period of admission in a Commonwealth jurisdiction is typically required.

Re-qualification

Re-qualification is required but this may be quite straightforward. Individual requirements will vary from island to island.

Lifestyle

As a lawyer working offshore, there are hundreds of islands within reach, each with its own charm. Wherever you go, you can depend on little seasonal variation and enough free time to enjoy the stunning beaches, national parks and abundance of leisure activities. There are many excellent golf courses and cricket fields, and even squash courts and ice rinks available. The natural appeal of these islands is enormous, with birds, mammals, reptiles and insects of all colours. Not to mention, of course, some of the best diving in the world.
